Created in 1993, the Corporation for National Service is a public-private partnership that engages Americans of all ages in service through three national service initiatives - AmeriCorps, which includes more than 600 local and national programs, AmeriCorps*VISTA, and AmeriCorps*NCCC; the National Senior Service Corps, which includes Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program; and Learn and Serve America, which provides models and resources for teachers integrating service into classrooms from kindergarten through college.

Throughout our nation, many schools are discovering the value of service-learning -- through projects that link education and service. At the forefront of this movement is Learn and Serve America, which helps support nearly one million students from kindergarten through college who are meeting community needs while improving their academic skills and learning the habits of good citizenship. In addition to providing Learn and Serve grants and scholarships for student service, the Corporation for National Service also promotes youth service through the National Service Leader Schools Program.

The President has said that the challenges America faces are unprecedented, and that we need to build a new foundation for economic growth in America. The Administration has begun this work with dramatic new investments in education, health care and clean energy, but we cannot do this alone here in Washington. Economic recovery is as much about what you're doing in your communities as what we're doing in Washington – and it’s going to take all of us, working together. To support the King Day of Service, the Corporation for National and Community Service, in consultation with the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change provides grants to public and non-profit organizations to mobilize Americans to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday as a day of service to others. It's a day on, not a day off.
